I began working with alcohol and substance use disorders in 2002 in a hospital-based outpatient treatment program for six years. Since that time, I have provided therapy in research studies investigating the effectiveness of brief therapeutic interventions for problem drinking. I have worked with a wide variety of people at different stages of problem drinking, from “over-doing it” on the weekends to experiencing serious health, family, social, employment, and legal problems. I have also provided treatment based on a range of goals, from moderated drinking to harm reduction, to abstinence.
